Mérida, Yucatán, 16 de Marzo de 2026.- En el corazón de la blanca Mérida, el calendario marca una fecha que no es solo una efeméride, sino un recordatorio del espíritu indomable de la península. Hoy conmemoramos el DÍA DE LA BANDERA YUCATECA, el símbolo de un periodo en el que Yucatán decidió caminar solo, desafiando al gigante centralista que gobernaba desde la Ciudad de México.
Y es que el asalto a la norma: El 16 de marzo de 1841 la historia no se escribe con tibiezas. Aquel marzo de 1841, el ambiente en el ayuntamiento de Mérida estaba cargado de tensión. Bajo el liderazgo del estratega político Miguel Barbachano, un grupo de partidarios de la autonomía irrumpió en la sesión de instalación del cabildo.
No fue un acto vandálico, sino una exigencia de justicia política. El reclamo era claro: el fin del régimen centralista de Antonio López de Santa Anna. Los yucatecos, celosos de sus libertades y de su autonomía económica, desconocieron a un gobierno que pretendía dictar el destino de la península desde un escritorio a miles de kilómetros de distancia.
TRES COLORES Y CINCO ESTRELLAS: La anatomía de un sueño
Para un pueblo independiente se necesitaba una identidad visual. Así nació la bandera que hoy adorna los balcones yucatecos:
El lienzo verde: Un campo que alberga cinco estrellas, las cuales representan a los pilares de la región en aquel entonces: Mérida, Campeche, Tekax, Izamal y Valladolid.
La tricolor horizontal: Tres franjas (dos rojas y una blanca) que gritaban soberanía.
Aquel lienzo no era solo tela; era una declaración de principios. Representaba a la República de Yucatán, una nación que durante casi una década tuvo su propia Constitución, sus propias leyes y, lo más importante, una visión de vanguardia que incluso introdujo el concepto del Juicio de Amparo al sistema legal mexicano.
Un legado que ondea en el presente
Aunque los avatares de la historia —especialmente la cruenta Guerra de Castas— obligaron a Yucatán a reintegrarse a la federación mexicana en 1848, la esencia de aquel movimiento persiste.
Hoy, ver la bandera yucateca ondear nuevamente en edificios no es un llamado a la separación, sino un tributo a la identidad. Es el reconocimiento de que México es más fuerte cuando respeta la pluralidad y la historia de sus estados.
